“World Day for Farmed Animals is October 2nd, chosen because it is Gandhi’s birthday. Throughout his life, Gandhi undertook nearly 20 fasts as political and social protest.
Most farmed animals are starved for hours, even days, as they are being transported to slaughter. In remembrance and solidarity with their tremendous suffering, we invite you to join activists across the world in a Fast Against Slaughter on October 2nd.”
The good folks at F.A.R.M. have said that you can interpret the fast however you’d like, so Muki and I have decided to fast from sundown on October 1 to sundown on October 2. We’ll only be consuming water during the fast.
The only other time I’ve fasted was in college 11 years ago, and it was because my boyfriend at the time asked me to join him for religious reasons. Unlike him, I wasn’t active in the church and I didn’t really comprehend why I was fasting. I was occupied going to class throughout the day and remember being extremely hungry – and was super happy to see that pizza delivered at midnight. So, needless to say, that wasn’t of real significance to me.
Anyone who really knows me has a good understanding that I get extremely cranky without food. I like to think I’m a pretty level-headed person when I have something in my stomach, but sans food and I turn into the Hulk. So, I’m a little nervous about abstaining from food for an entire 24 hours. But after serious consideration, I decided as an activist I had to do this. I want to make a stand for the animals.
I’m already mentally preparing for that moment where I’ll want to cave and eat something – I’m going to focus on why I’m doing the fast, which will help keep my purpose in mind. After all, this is just one day that I’m doing this whereas animal cruelty happens every single day.
If you’d like to join me, Muki and nearly 10,000 others from 80+ countries, you can take the pledge here.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.” – Mohandas Gandhi
